The Unitarian Universalist Church of Hot Springs welcomes back our dear friend and wonderful historian, Dr Charles “Orson” Cook. We are honored to have speak to us on the last Sunday of 2015 about, “History; a Frustrating Disciple.” On the surface at least, history appears to be a relatively simple process of remembering and using factual information from the past. In its most primitive form, this requires only a recollection of events and personalities. In short, a good memory is all that is necessary to master this version of a far more complex –and lesser known—side of history, one that demands an ability to assemble evidence into sophisticated patterns. To make matters even more frustrating, historians are now studying persons and topics seldom part of our conventional narrative about what constitutes legitimate history.
Dr. Cook enjoyed a twenty-five year career teaching and lecturing at St. John’s School in Houston Texas, where his position for the last five years was History Department Chair and Director Institute for Teaching and Learning. He then moved to the University of Houston, where he spent the last five years of his career as an Associate Professor of History in the Honors College, He and his wife Elsie Hay Cook, divide their time between their home in Houston, and their home in DiamondHead. They are long times friends of the UUChurch of Hot Springs, and members of The Unitarian Fellowship of Houston. Welcome home Orson and Elsie, we always delighted to have you with us.
The service is at 10:30, preceded by refreshments at 10:00am.
All are welcome and we hope you will be able to join us.
There will be no 9:00am study group this Sunday.
